HTC Thunderbolt gets unboxed by Wirefly, Verizon delays launch?
Written on February 9, 2011 at 8:59 am, by JohnThird-party mobile retailer Wirefly has just released a seven-minute video detailing the HTC Thunderbolt’s unboxing procedure in glorious detail, something that’s just liable to make the wait for prospective buyers even more excruciating. Speaking of waiting, word on the street is that the phone might be delayed from its previously-rumored Valentine’s Day launch; an ominous screen shot over on Droid Life says there’s “no ETA at this time,” a fact corroborated by Amazon’s removal of the launch date on its Thunderbolt product page. What’s more, in announcing its unboxing, Wirefly only says that it’ll “begin selling the Thunderbolt soon” without offering a date — so yeah, all signs are pointing to an open-ended delay here. Let’s hope it stays within the short bounds of February, eh? Follow the break for the full video.

Over the last fifteen years, innovation maven Seth Godin has written twelve best-selling books about breaking all the traditional rules in business. But Godin?s thirteenth book, a little thing about initiative which will be published next month, threatens to be the biggest rule-breaker in his destructive career. Godin?s thirteenth book may well be unlucky for the traditional publishing business. You see, Godin?s big new thing is the Domino Project, a next generation publishing venture that he is launching with Amazon. And one of the first books published by the Domino Project will be his own little thing about initiative. Video ahead.

Is Google Music’s cloud model causing record labels to steer clear?
Written on February 9, 2011 at 4:59 am, by John
According to any number of sources — and indications from Google itself — Google Music should have launched sometime late last year. We’re now a full month into 2011, and still no Google Music. So what’s the holdup?
Business Insider has one source who feels that Google’s cloud-based model is the bone of contention. “The challenge is that the publishers want to be paid for EVERY download – even if it’s a verified purchaser downloading a song they’ve purchased multiple times.” Yes, that is totally insane. Especially when you consider the fact that some of those labels are already selling tracks on 7digital, which allows users to download their purchases and stream them to a mobile device via the 7digital app.
One Sony exec was quoted as saying, “We are very uncomfortable with a model where you can just throw anything into the cloud and stream it, if what you threw into the cloud was not legitimately purchased.” Interestingly, this comes from the same Sony that allows my wife to dump any old MP3 she wants onto her Walkman — regardless of how she acquired it.

IP addresses are about to run out. Will the world end?
Written on February 9, 2011 at 2:59 am, by John
According to one IPv6 provider, we are now just days away from the IPv4 ARPAgeddon, or IPocalypse [not to be confused with the iPocalypse].
With IPv4 providing only 4.3 billion addresses, we all knew that the end of the reckless and fancy-free Internet era was coming — we just didn’t know when. The death knell has started to ring. Asia is on its knees plaintively pleading for its fix of IP addresses. Smartphones, the fastest growing market, will soon be unable to connect to the Internet. You might turn on your desktop PC, only to be told that you need to wait for an IP address to become available.
In short, it’s now high time to consider our options.

Greenpois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 released

The Chronic Dev Team has unleashed the the untethered greenpois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, which means you don’t have to re-root your phone after every reboot.
Some provisos, though: the jailbreak is only available for Mac users right now, and the greenpois0n website seems to be down, so you can’t actually download the jailbreak. Also, according to the excited Engadget commenters, it sounds like the installation of the jailbreak is a little bit finicky.
As always, back up your phone beforehand, and don’t proceed unless you really know what you’re doing.

Windows Phone 7 data leak problem traced to Yahoo! Mail app
Written on February 8, 2011 at 9:59 pm, by John
Microsoft has admitted to Paul Thurrott that the “third party app” which has been responsible for mysterious data leakage on Windows Phone 7 is, in fact, Yahoo! Mail. The admission came only hours after Rafael Rivera had already proved this to be the case. Rivera noted that Yahoo! was transmitting about 25 times more data than it needed to. Yikes.
Microsoft originally reported that this issue affected only a small number of WP7 users. We’re inclined to agree with LiveSide that the number must be really small in the grand scheme of things, considering Windows Mobile devices outsold Windows Phone 7 devices last quarter.

How to make your own torrents and upload them to a public tracker
Written on February 8, 2011 at 7:59 pm, by John
This week’s series of tips is all about downloading files via BitTorrent. We’ll highlight ways in which to torrent more efficiently, obtain higher download speeds, and generally make the whole process easier. For more tech tips, check our Tips index.
To wrap up our series of BitTorrent tips, we’re going to show you how to make your own torrents. After all, torrents have to come from somewhere, right? You’ve been leeching for years — isn’t it time to give something back?
Just follow these simple steps:
- Open up your BitTorrent client of choice. uTorrent, Vuze, Transmission — whichever, they all work in the same way
- File > Create Torrent (or simply hit the ‘Create’ button, if there is one)
- Select a source file or directory — this can be absolutely anything
- Now you need to find some trackers. If you’re making a torrent for a private torrent index, make sure you use its tracker. Otherwise, paste all of the following into the box:
udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80/announce
udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80/announce
http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
http://tracker.torrent.to:2710/announce - If you want to add a comment, go for it! Include your name, website, email address — whatever you like
- Make sure Private Torrent is unchecked, unless you’re creating a torrent for a private tracker
- Click Create – then add the new torrent to your client and start seeding!
Now, if you’re just making a torrent to share a file between friends, classmates or workmates, just send them the .torrent file and tell them to hop on. It’s as simple as that.
If you want to share your torrent publicly, you need to upload the torrent to an index like The Pirate Bay. First register an account, and then simply click ‘Upload torrent‘ — the method is the same for uploading to a private site (just make sure you’ve used its private tracker!)

BBC iPlayer app landing on UK iPads this Thursday, US in June
Written on February 8, 2011 at 3:59 pm, by JohnA BBC Interactive Operations Engineer has British hearts all aflutter tonight with a tweet announcing that the iPlayer app for the iPad is ready to roll out this Thursday, February 10th. It’s specific to the tablet for now, so no iPhone, and will only debut in the UK, so no BBC America for you just yet, though this is the first step toward making that cozy dream a reality. Taking the BBC TV catchup service into international waters will be done on the basis of a paid subscription model, which should dissuade all the TV License payers in the UK from revolting, but do bear in mind that this upcoming tablet app will only allow content streaming over WiFi. You’ll be able to browse the iPlayer over 3G, we’re told, but will need to hook up to some roomier wireless pipes to sip the sweet nectar of BBC Entertainment on your iPad (in app form, browser-based options are a whole other matter). Stay tuned for the fully detailed announcement in a couple of days.

How to hide the Ribbon menu in Microsoft Office applications
Written on February 8, 2011 at 1:59 pm, by John
This week’s series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.
The new Ribbon interface on Office 2007 and 2010 is quite fancy, and once you get used to it, it’s a lot of fun to use. One of its few downsides is that it’s tall – far taller than a “traditional” menu. If you’re working on a netbook or are otherwise pressed for screen space, it can sometimes be handy to collapse the Ribbon and make it as compact as a regular menu.
To collapse it, simply double-click one of the Ribbon’s tabs, such as “Home”. The whole thing will instantly shrink down to the line of tabs. Clicking a tab will temporarily expand it back. If you’d rather do the same thing using the keyboard, simply hit Ctrl+F1 (that’s what I normally do).

HP’s Pavilion dv6 and dv7 get Envy-like features, g-series loses the bargain basement looks
Written on February 8, 2011 at 10:59 am, by JohnWe know the story: all you want is an HP Envy 14 or 17, but you just don’t have the cash. Well, as it turns out, HP’s been thinking long and hard about your issue, and its new Pavilion dv6 and dv7 may very well be what the doctor ordered. Pulling out some of the higher-end Envy features, the new 15.6- and 17.3-inch laptops have been refreshed not only with Beats Audio speakers, HD webcams, and HP’s CoolSense technology, but they’ve also been given “dark umber” metal lids / palm rests. Oh, and did we mention the light-up touchpads? Okay, so it’s not the same as the Envy’s etched-metal case, but they’re certainly a step up in design from the previous glossy rigs, and for their respective $750 and $1,000 starting prices, there’s no arguing that it’s a pretty sweet deal. Spec-wise the machines are just as impressive — they boast Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors, AMD Radeon 6000M graphics, and USB 3.0 ports. Additionally, both models will be available with Blu-ray drives and up to two terabytes of storage. Want it tomorrow? We don’t blame you, but you’ll have to wait until “sometime in March” to order these bad boys.
On the lower end, HP’s refreshed its Pavilion g-series, and you know what? For under $500, they don’t look half bad. Yep, HP’s gone ahead and given its budget mainstream line a total makeover with colorful lids (name a color, they’ve got it), a pseudo-chiclet keyboard, a touchpad that is totally flush with the palmrest, and Altec Lansing speakers. But while you may be able to take the bargain look out of the laptop, it’s hard to remove those bargain specs — the 14-inch g4, 15.4-inch g6, and 17.3-inch g7 get cut off at AMD’s Athlon and Turion and Intel’s Pentium and Core i3 processors. Still for the $450 to $600 price points, it’s not too shabby. The g-series will be available on March 13th, but until then enjoy the hands-on shots below and the full press release after the break.

Samsung announces PL20 and ES80, brings 2011 pocket camera lineup to 12 total
Written on February 8, 2011 at 9:59 am, by John Brace yourself, Samsung has new point-and-shoots to fill in what little pockets of consumerism weren’t intrigued by any of the company’s five CES shooters… or even the five more announced just weeks later. First up is the PL20 (pictured left). A 14 megapixel CCD sensor, 27mm wide angle lens, 5x zoom, digital image stabilization, 720p 24fps HD video with Smart Filters. That one comes out in March for a penny under $120, with a choice of silver, pink, black, and tomato red (Sammy’s description). For the ES80, subtract two megapixels from the sensor, nix the HD recording, keep the color options, bump the release date one month, and subtract $20. You get the idea. Full details and press release after the break.

Google offers $20,000 for successful Chrome hack at Pwn2Own 2011
Written on February 8, 2011 at 8:59 am, by John
Google isn’t just bringing the Chrome Browser to Pwn2Own 2011 — this time, it’s also bringing its own hardware. The Cr-48 Chrome OS laptop will be on hand for the browser exploiting hullabaloo, and Google is offering $20,000 and a CR-48 notebook for a successful exploit. According to the event’s organizer, the attacker will also need to escape Chrome’s sandbox. At last year’s event, prominent researcher Charlie Miller said that’s no easy task, so we’re very curious to see whether someone will succeed this time around.
Offering cash for exposing vulnerabilities isn’t anything new for Google, of course. The Big G just paid one developer $7,500 for finding a trio of vulnerabilities in Chrome back in January.

Acrobat Reader X delivers on security promise
Written on February 8, 2011 at 7:59 am, by John
Over at the Naked Security blog, Sophos Labs’ Paul Baccas posted his first encounter with PDF spam using Adobe Reader X — which Adobe promised would feature an improved set of security features. Baccas was examining a new spam campaign which aims to trick users into opening a malicious PDF, first opening it in Reader 8 and then in Reader X.
When opened in the old version, the PDF attack mechanism springs into action and downloads malicious code from a remote server. Under Reader X, however, all he saw was the dialog above. “It appears that an update introduced in Adobe Reader X has broken a fundamental part of this threat. Well done Adobe!” says Baccas.
We’re also in agreement with his recommendation that everyone who can — network administrators included — update their systems to Adobe Reader X as soon as possible.

Starting today, existing Verizon customers can pre-order an iPhone 4, which won’t actually be available until Feb. 10. And as you’d expect given the timing, Apple has lifted its embargo on reviews of the device, and the usual suspects have weighed in.
The general consensus seems to be: Yep, it’s an iPhone 4 all right. The main difference is the network. Call reliability is better, Internet access is slower, and no, you can’t access data and talk on the phone at the same time.
In other words, it’s exactly what you’d expect of an iPhone 4 that works on Verizon – which is one reason I didn’t even request a phone to review.
From David Pogue of the New York Times:
I took the Verizon iPhone to five cities, including the two Bermuda Triangles of AT&T reception: San Francisco and New York. Holding AT&T and Verizon iPhones side by side in the passenger seat of a car, I dialed 777-FILM simultaneously, and then rode around until a call dropped. (Why that number? Because I wanted to call a landline, eliminating the other person’s cell reception from the equation. Also, Mr. Moviefone can carry the entire conversation by himself, so I could concentrate on the testing.)
In San Francisco, the AT&T phone dropped the call four times in 30 minutes of driving; the Verizon phone never did. The Verizon iPhone also held its line in several Manhattan intersections where the AT&T call died. At a Kennedy airport gate, the AT&T phone couldn’t even find a signal; the Verizon dialed with a smug yawn.
Most impressively, the Verizon iPhone effortlessly made calls in the Cellphone Signal Torture Chamber of Doom: my house.
From Walt Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal:
On the big question, I can say that, at least in the areas where I was using it, the Verizon model did much, much better with voice calls. In numerous tries over nine days, I had only three dropped calls on the Verizon unit, and those were all to one person who was using an AT&T iPhone in an especially bad area for AT&T: San Francisco. With the nearly identical AT&T model, I often get that many dropped calls in one day.
Calls on the Verizon unit were mostly crisp and clear, including speakerphone calls and those made over my car’s Bluetooth connection. On my first full day of testing, I did have several Verizon calls that dropped out for a few seconds, before recovering. Apple attributed this to a very minor glitch I’d encountered in my initial setup of the phone and urged me to reboot it. I did and suffered no more momentary dropouts.
Mossberg also tried out the Verizon iPhone’s new hotspot feature, which lets it serve as an access point for up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices.
The Verizon model also introduces a feature that some iPhone power users have been craving but that AT&T hasn’t allowed in the past: the ability to use the phone, for an extra monthly fee, as a Wi-Fi hot spot for Internet connectivity to multiple laptops or other devices. In my tests, this worked fine with Windows and Macintosh laptops, and an iPad. Wednesday afternoon, AT&T countered by announcing a similar Wi-Fi hot spot plan for the iPhone at an unspecified future date.
From Ed Baig at USA Today:
A winning outcome is a slam-dunk as far as I’m concerned, at least based on my six days of testing a Verizon iPhone in New York City and Northern New Jersey. Though not every call was crystal clear — this is a cellphone, after all — I haven’t experienced any of the dropped calls, so far anyway, or other frustrating hiccups during my tests that have been driving some owners of the AT&T iPhone bonkers during the 3½ years that the carrier has had iPhone exclusivity in the U.S.
Baig’s also got video showing the Verizon iPhone in action.
While the big-newspaper reviewers focused on calls, I really appreciated Joshua Topolsky’s reivew at Engadget, which compared the data speeds on AT&T’s and Verizon’s networks. In systematic tests, AT&T’s network was usually faster, though its latency was often much worse. That latter factor may have helped the Verizon network seem faster:
Let’s put this as simply as we can: data rates on the Verizon iPhone 4 we tested were dramatically slower than those on its AT&T counterpart. How much slower? Well, even though network speeds fluctuate based on many factors, we didn’t see the Verizon device peak much beyond 1.4 Mbps on downloads (and even that high was rare), and it barely hit 0.5 Mbps on upstream. On the other hand, the AT&T device regularly pulled down above 3 Mbps, and 1 Mbps or more going up. We’ll admit that the Verizon speeds were more consistent, but the irrefutable fact is that AT&T’s network is much, much faster, at least in our neck of the woods.
Of course, how much that’s going to affect you is based on a lot of factors, and in our day-to-day, there wasn’t a noticeable sensation of the device being slower. That consistency in data rates actually may have helped in some situations — particularly when pulling down maps. We see our AT&T device stop and start quite a bit on major data pulls, whereas the Verizon phone seemed to latch onto a stream and not stop until the bits were uniformly situated on our phone. That said, there’s no denying that YouTube videos and streaming content is going to appear more quickly on your AT&T handset.
Engadget’s review has a nifty chart showing a series of tests at different times and locations.
Lance Ulanoff at PC Mag ran a real-world test of the hotspot feature:
I asked my two children to come with me for a ride and bring both of their iPod touches. While in the car, I followed the on-screen instructions to set up a new hotspot. The Verizon iPhone automatically provides a Wi-Fi password you can share with those who want to connect to your phone (you can also create your own). The kids both saw the new Wi-Fi hotspot on their iPods and with the security key, they were connected in moments. I had a strong 3G signal and the kids had a strong Wi-Fi connection to the Verizon iPhone. We started driving and I asked my daughter to see if she could surf the Web. She went to Google and initiated an image search. The results came up immediately and she had no trouble browsing individual images. Simultaneously, my son opened Pandora and started streaming music. We hooked up the iPod to my car stereo. Only once during the 20 minute drive did the connection stutter, but it quickly recovered. The whole time, the Verizon iPhone noted on-screen that two people were connected to the personal hotspot. Apple said this alert is useful to ensure that there aren’t more people leeching off your connection. If any of us had stopped using the hotspot for 90 seconds, the hotspot would have automatically turned off to conserve power.
And for those of you wondering whether the Verizon iPhone 4 suffers from the same "death grip" antenna problem as its AT&T predecessor, M.G. Siegler at TechCrunch has good news:
This Verizon version of the iPhone 4 seems to have none of the same antenna issues. Try as I might, using the “death grip” and every other grip I can actually do, I can no longer reproduce the same attenuation problem that the previous iPhone 4 model had. I death grip the thing, and no bars drop. More importantly, calls don’t drop and data doesn’t stop. Again, Apple won’t comment, but problem, apparently, solved.
At Macworld, Jason Snell goes into detail about what to expect if you try to use the Internet and voice calling at the same time on Verizon’s iPhone 4:
Adopting the CDMA cellular standard does force this iPhone 4 to take one step back–back to the days of the original iPhone, in fact. Unlike AT&T’s 3G network, which can transmit data and voice simultaneously, the Verizon 3G network can only do one or the other.
That has a pretty serious side-effect: if you’re using the Internet and your phone rings, your Internet connection immediately drops. (So does the Internet link to any device currently using Personal Hotspot, though the hotspot’s Wi-Fi network itself stays alive.) Once the call goes to voice-mail or you hang up, the Internet connection springs back to life. For example, the live audio stream I was listening to on an iPad connected via the Hotspot started right back up after a call on the iPhone 4 concluded.
If this was an issue that only precluded you from checking your e-mail while dialed into a conference call, it would be a minor annoyance. But if you come to rely on the Personal Hotspot feature–say, sharing data with a couple of colleagues while on a road trip–it’s got the potential to be infuriating.
If that’s not enough for you, there are also reviews at Bloomberg, Wired, Laptop Mag and Daring Fireball. They all pretty much say the same thing, just in different ways.
My advice on buying an iPhone 4 that works on Verizon remains the same: Don’t. You’ll be paying full price for a device that’s likely to be replaced with the iPhone 5 in June or July. Wait for that model, but I wouldn’t count on it to work on Verizon’s 4G, LTE network – that’s more likely to happen with iPhone 6, since Apple traditionally waits for such technologies to mature before adopting them.
Still, I suspect quite a few people with poor impulse control will jump on the chance to have an iPhone on a network with superior call reliability. Those with wisdom and patience will be better off waiting.

Kyocera’s Dual-Screen Android Echo Phone Confirmed On Sprint’s Website [Confirmed]
Written on February 8, 2011 at 5:59 am, by John Looks like the WSJ was on to something after all; Sprint’s website confirms the existence of the dual-screen, Android-packing Kyocera Echo. It’ll apparently pivot open to 4.7 inches of display real estate, which doesn’t sound so big, does it? No more details at the moment, but hopefully David Blaine will be pulling Echo’s price, availability, and specs out of a hat a few hours from now. [Sprint via Engadget] More »

How to install non-Market applications on Android
Written on February 8, 2011 at 3:59 am, by John
This week’s tips series is all about Android, highlighting some the operating system’s built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.
When an Android user wants to install a new application, they usually just fire up the Market app, search for it, and install it with a couple of well-aimed button taps.
There are times, however, when you may want to load a non-Market application. For example, a perfectly good application may get banned from the market, but still be available from its original publisher.
By default, Android doesn’t let you install non-Market apps due to the security risks involved (not to imply that the Market is entirely devoid of malicious apps…). To tell Android you’re a big boy (or girl) and can take care of yourself, do this:
1) Go to Settings > Applications
2) Check the box next to Unknown sources
3) Confirm that you understand the risks
That’s it! You are now free to install any application, even if it didn’t come from the market. Just be careful!

EntArch Practitioner Guides and Reference Architectures
Written on February 8, 2011 at 2:59 am, by John
You can talk about enterprise architecture, and talk, and talk. Or you can get down in the trenches, roll up your sleeves, and take an active role in transforming the enterprise.
Even the world?s largest white board and an unlimited budget for dry erase markers isn?t going to turn that lumbering behemoth of an enterprise into the sleek, agile business powerhouse it must become. If you?re interested in moving enterprise architecture off of the white board and into action, you?ll want to check out IT Strategies from Oracle.
What is it, you ask? IT Strategies from Oracle is ?an authorized library of guidelines and reference architectures.? Where the rubber meets the road, that library consists of 25 documents (and counting), representing more than 1200 pages of solid, real-world enterprise architecture insight, including practitioner guides and reference architectures. You get:
- Overview documents
- Oracle Reference Architectures
- Enterprise Technology Strategies for Service-Oriented Architecture
- Enterprise Technology Strategies for Business Process Management
The best part? It?s all free to registered OTN members.
So step away from those markers and get busy: IT Strategies from Oracle

A Small Car is a frustrating 3D Flash Time-Waster
Written on February 8, 2011 at 1:59 am, by JohnIt’s not often that I see 3D attempted in Flash, and to be honest, after playing A Small Car I can see why.
It’s not that it’s not a fun game – otherwise I wouldn’t mention it as a potential Time Waster. It’s just very frustrating. Your job is to steer a car over a complex course, hanging in mid-air, to the checkered “landing zone” at the end of each level. You sometimes need to jump, too – so that means you can’t always drive super-slow. The tracks are quite short, and it’s all keyboard driven — you don’t need to use the mouse for anything.
As an experiment in 3D Flash content, it is quite impressive. The graphics are very blocky, but the motion is smooth. You can even change cameras by pressing C if you want to see what the track looks like from the driver’s seat.
It’s a fun game, but only if you’ve got plenty of patience.

Desert Moon is an impressive tower defense Time Waster
Written on February 7, 2011 at 10:59 pm, by JohnIf you look at the type of time wasters I normally cover, you’ll mostly find physics games, a platformer here and there, and maybe a puzzle or two.
One genre I almost never cover is tower defense games. I guess I normally don’t enjoy them all that much – it’s purely subjective. But this is one thing that makes Desert Moon all the more remarkable: It’s a tower defense game, but I actually had fun playing it.
You’re commanding a troop of soldiers stranded on an alien planet for five days. Each day, multiple waves of incoming beasts are going to run at you, and try to get past your defenses. Your job is to place your soldiers before each wave so that their fire pattern (and weapons) effectively cover the surface, and keep the beasts from getting past them.
Once a beast touches one of your soldiers, the soldier dies and there’s a gap in your defenses. When enough beasts manage to make it through, you die. Later on in the game, beasts don’t have to touch the soldiers – they explode when they’re near enough, so you need to start using longer-range weapons to keep the beasts away.
There are six different types of weapons, as well as four types of power-ups you can use during each wave. It’s Flash, but it still took a couple of minutes to load on my DSL connection. This is one game you may find yourself spending quite some time with.

BlackBerry PlayBook may be able to run Android apps, thanks to Dalvik
Written on February 7, 2011 at 9:59 pm, by John
When RIM acquired QNX, it was all but certain that the days of Java-powered BlackBerry OSes were drawing to a close. That doesn’t mean RIM plans on ditching support for all those legacy BlackBerry apps developed for use in the enterprise, however. Boy Genius Report has received information that RIM intends to support those apps by way of a virtual machine — and what better Java VM to use than Google’s Dalvik (which drives Android)?
In theory, a Dalvik VM running on a BlackBerry device could be capable of running an Android .APK. However, since most apps are closely tied to OS-specific APIs, there’s also a very good chance that most Android apps wouldn’t do anything noteworthy on future RIM devices. Still, the possibility is an exciting one — and the ability to handle Android apps would definitely make BlackBerry a bit more enticing to both developers and users.

GNOME 3 Shell now available to test in SUSE and Fedora Live image format
Written on February 7, 2011 at 9:00 pm, by John
GNOME Shell, the skin on top of the upcoming GNOME 3 desktop manager, can now be easily and safely tested by simply burning a Live CD, making a bootable USB stick, or simply mounting an image in VirtualBox. Fedora, ahead of GNOME 3′s adoption in version 15 of the distro, wants people to alpha test with a live image of Rawhide; or if you’re not a fan of Fedora, there’s also a SUSE-based GNOME 3 Live image.
Both flavors will let you test the upcoming and much-anticipated release of GNOME 3 and Shell without meddling with your current OS — and you can try it out, irrespective of whether you’re currently a Linux users or not.
I’ve successfully opened both live image ISOs in VirtualBox, so you don’t even need to reboot to try out GNOME 3 — hooray!

Mercedes F-Cell World Drive gets off to an inauspicious start
Written on February 7, 2011 at 7:01 pm, by JohnCircling the globe on hydrogen power sounds like a bit of a challenge, what with the lack H2 pumps and all, but Mercedes-Benz set off to show that it could do just that — with the help of a mobile filling station, natürlich. It’s the F-Cell World Drive, and unfortunately, things got off to something of a bad start with two cars running out of fuel on the very first leg of the journey, one with Autoblog‘s Michael Harley at the wheel, no less. This first leg apparently began with a trip down an unrestricted bit of the Autobahn and, well, it seems the drivers of the cars decided to see what the little green B-Class F-Cells could do. The answer is 110mph, and of course moving along at this rate of speed did little for their range. The two cars came up 20km short of their first planned refueling stop, heavy right feet resulting in consumption of 1.5Kg of hydrogen per 100km distance — roughly equivalent of 45mpg and way less than the 71mpg equivalent the cars usually manage. We’re told day two, when drivers kept the speed to around 70mph, progressed much more smoothly, with both cars covering their expected legs without issue.

BlueGriffon: a cross-platform WYSIWYG HTML5 and CSS3 editor based on Firefox 4
Written on February 7, 2011 at 5:00 pm, by JohnIf you want to get in on the HTML5 and CSS3 revolution, and would prefer some training wheels while you learn all of the new HTML tags and CSS transitions and transforms, look no further than BlueGriffon. It’s free, open-source, and runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
BlueGriffon is built upon a recent version of Firefox 4. It uses the same Gecko page layout engine — and in fact, lots of the UI elements look like they’ve come straight from Firefox 4. There are even add-ons to provide extra functionality, but they’ll cost you 30 euros (about $40).
As far as actual usability goes, BlueGriffon is pretty good. The UI isn’t exactly easy to use (but these things rarely are), but source editor is good — and there’s a built-in SVG creator that works well. You have access to all of the HTML5 tag types and CSS3 selectors, but not through the right-click context menu, which is annoying. The primary feature of BlueGriffon has to be the ability to see the effect of CSS3 selectors instantly — or simply as a text editor that has a built-in Firefox 4 preview window.
According to WebUpd8, the nightly builds are the most stable. Also, if you’re using Linux, grab the binary installer rather than the .deb, which apparently has some issues. The Windows build crashed quite a few times during my tests, too.

Angry Birds Rio: Rovio secures silver screen tie-in with animated film Rio
Written on February 7, 2011 at 4:00 pm, by JohnRovio has just announced its first big-money commercial tie-in with upcoming film Rio — which, rather unsurprisingly, is a film about birds. With the imaginative title Angry Birds Rio, the new game will have a story that revolves around the characters from the film (which comes from the makers of Ice Age!)
It’s an all-new game with 45 levels, and it will be available on “smartphones and tablets worldwide.” Despite making its debut on the PS3 and PSP, there’s no mention of the Angry Birds Rio coming to consoles. The trailer is after the break — and it’s worth watching just for the first few seconds. The game will arrive sometime in March.
In other news, there’ll also be a Valentine’s Day version of the game. The backgrounds are pink, the birds are pink, and the pigs’ defenses are pink. How adorable. Oh, and apparently there’s also plans for an animated Angry Birds TV show. Very few details are known as yet, but of course, your trusty Bird Squad will apprise you of any new information.
[Some random trivia: the main character of the film, Blu, is voiced by Jesse Eisenberg -- who played Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network.]

Last blocks of IPv4 addresses allocated, exhaustion now imminent
Written on February 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm, by John
This is just a quick note to say that, in a ceremonial event in Miami, the last five blocks of IPv4 addresses have now been handed out by IANA, a part of ICANN. Each of the five regional registries — North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia — now have only a few million IP addresses to allocate.
IP address exhaustion will hit Asia first. With 24 million IP addresses used by APNIC in January 2011, and only around 50 million addresses left in its pool, exhaustion is expected to occur in the next few months. Europe will be next, probably towards the end of 2011, and North America will follow sometime in 2012.
Are you prepared for the IPocalypse?!

In the meantime, hit the source link and see some great pictures of the Sony Ericsson Neo. I certainly hope the insides are as nice as the outsides! [My Android Life]

HTC Desire 2 picture leaked, also shows up in Vodafone’s inventory
Written on February 7, 2011 at 8:00 am, by JohnOver the weekend, a surreptitious new photo of the new HTC Desire 2 hit the world wide web, and in addition to the image, the new handset has found its way into Vodafone Germany’s inventory system (along with several other goodies) — meaning that the second coming of the Desire is likely imminent. Word on the street is that it has a Super AMOLED screen of unknown resolution and runs Android 2.3.1 (Gingerbread). Examination of the spy shot reveals that HTC swapped out the tactile buttons of the original Desire for the capacitive variety, added a front facing camera, and made it slightly smaller than its predecessor. It seems that HTC has failed on the ‘quietly’ part of its slogan, but at least it looks like the company didn’t botch the ‘brilliant’ bit as well. Stay tuned to find out — Mobile World Congress gets going in under a week, you know.
[Thanks, William and Robert]

uTorrent Android app manages torrents, pushes downloads to your device
Written on February 7, 2011 at 6:00 am, by John
We’ve played with some good remote torrenting apps in the past, but now, at long last, the most popular desktop torrent client has a companion app as well. uTorrent Remote for Android is available for download from the Android Market, and it’s one of the slickest mobile torrent apps we’ve seen.
With uTorrent Remote you can fully manage your uTorrent desktop client: add and remove downloads, pause transfers, and check your RSS feeds for new downloads. Once a torrent finishes downloading, you can even push the completed files to your device for mobile viewing. It’s incredibly simple to set up, too. Just set up some login details in Options > Preferences > Web, and then use the same username and password on your device. There’s no need to fuss with your router or firewall, either — uTorrent takes care of negotiating the connection on its own.
On your desktop, you’ll need to download the uTorrent 3.0 beta (currently Windows only). Android 2.1 is required on your device to run Remote.

Ahead of iPhone Release, Verizon Throttles Network Speeds

BlueGriffon: a cross-platform WYSIWYG HTML5 and CSS3 editor based on Firefox 4
Written on February 7, 2011 at 4:00 am, by JohnIf you want to get in on the HTML5 and CSS3 revolution, and would prefer some training wheels while you learn all of the new HTML tags and CSS transitions and transforms, look no further than BlueGriffon.

Please Read: A Personal Appeal TO Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales
Written on February 7, 2011 at 3:00 am, by John
Editor’s Note: This is a guest post by Hunter Walk who spends way too much time researching 1980s hair metal bands on Wikipedia. His obsession with Wikipedia is unrelated to his day job leading the consumer product team at YouTube. Wikipedia is the world’s 5th largest website, runs no ads and, depressingly, seems to be perpetually on the fringe of solvency. Google for “Jimmy Wales personal appeal” (Wales is Wikipedia?s founder) and you’ll see that there are 32,000+ results, which gives you a sense of the fundraising requirements for this user-generated encyclopedia. The question of whether they’ll ever run ads in order to break this cycle is an ongoing debate. In fact there’s a Wikipedia page devoted to this topic with discussion about ads, opt-in ads, search ads, etc. At 400+ million users worldwide, any of these options could certainly raise considerable funds used to support the technical and philosophical mission of this non-profit. But to date, Wales has been reluctant to introduce any advertising. So where do we end up? After hitting its 10 year anniversary this January, the question is: can Wikipedia sustain itself for another 10 years without a significant change to its business model?

Nokia reportedly planning ‘organizational changes,’ mobile phones exec on the outs
Written on February 7, 2011 at 1:00 am, by John
Looks like Capital Markets Day is shaping up to be quite the barnburner for Nokia. In the wake of news that Microsoft and Nokia may have some sort of tie-up in the works, Germany weekly Wirtschaftswoche is reporting that newly appointed CEO Stephen Elop will be bidding adieu to a number of high-ranking officials. Citing “company sources,” the paper stated that Mary T. McDowell, a bigwig in the mobile phones unit, as well as Niklas Savander, the manager of the markets unit, could be on the outs. Moreover, Kai Oistamo (Chief Development Officer) and Tero Ojanpera, the manager responsible for services and mobile solutions, may also be enjoying their final weekends as Nokia employees. It’s all part of a monumental strategy shift, and if it all pans out, it’ll be Elop’s first major move since taking over as CEO last September. Of course, Anssi Vanjoki more or less left on his own accord, and the company has essentially forged ahead with little to no change since. We’re told that Nokia has hired headhunters to scout top people to fill said slots, but it’s hard to say why Elop feels that new brains are needed. Here’s hoping it’s the start of something… competitive.
Update: Having had a few minutes to digest this news, it’s worth pointing out that neither Alberto Torres (exec leading MeeGo Computers) nor Jo Harlow (head of Symbian Smartphones) are rumored to be at risk. So if the report is true, then these organizational changes appear focused on, 1) rectifying Nokia’s inability to quickly execute upon its corporate strategy and, 2) the recent walloping Nokia received in emerging markets like India where Nokia’s S40 feature phones once ruled the land, but are increasingly under attack by aggressively priced cellphones from Chinese and Indian handset makers.

Google Hotpot brings place recommendations to Google search
Written on February 7, 2011 at 12:00 am, by John
Launched back in November of 2010, Google Hotpot hasn’t gotten a lot of attention so far. That could be about to change, however, with the addition of Hotpot recommendations to Google Search results. If you’re searching for something Hotpot-friendly like sushi restaurants in your city, Google will show user reviews inline.
You can also click on the Places link below Everything to limit Hotpot recommendations to those made by your friends. The first step, of course, is to get everyone to opt-in to Hotpot by visiting the home page, choosing a display name, and uploading an avatar. Hotpot is also available in the Google Places iPhone app and in Google Maps for Android.

Android Honeycomb?s Mesmerizing Bootup Screen
Written on February 6, 2011 at 10:00 pm, by John
Earlier this week we posted an extensive preview of Android Honeycomb, the tablet version of Google’s mobile OS that will start shipping on devices later this month. But we saved one more tasty bit of Honeycomb for the weekend: the OS’s bootup screen. It looks like something out of Tron, and it’s a nice departure from the boot animation seen on the Nexus One and Nexus S, which features swirling strands of color coming together to form the Nexus ‘X’ symbol (you can watch it below).

How to install non-Market applications on Android
Written on February 6, 2011 at 7:00 pm, by John

Google’s Cr-48 netbook now surfing on AT&T’s GSM network (after a gentle hack)
Written on February 6, 2011 at 6:00 pm, by John
Oh, sure — Google’s being all-too-kind by handing out a few free megabytes of Verizon data with each of its Cr-48 netbooks, but if you’re both lucky enough to have one and more inclined to use that dust-collecting AT&T SIM of yours, there’s hardly a better day for you to pay attention to a hack. After noticing that a recent update to Chrome OS added GSM support for Qualcomm’s Gobi 3G chip, Hexxeh dug in a little to see what it’d take to get the Cr-48 operational with a data SIM from Ma Bell. Turns out there’s shockingly little needed from you; simply flip the Developer switch beneath the battery and follow the shell commands listed in the source link. It should be noted that there’s no data counter here, so watch those gigabytes if you’re working with a data cap. There, we solved your Saturday. You’re welcome.

HTC Desire 2, Flyer, Pyramid and LG Optimus 3D, Star Tab surface in Vodafone Germany inventory system
Written on February 6, 2011 at 5:00 pm, by JohnThere are leaks, and then there are leaks. As you can probably glean from the headline, this is most certainly a case of the latter. FoneArena has received shots of what appears to be a Vodafone Germany inventory system, and it’s a system currently overflowing with both rumored and heretofore unheard of product names. HTC’s Flyer and Pyramid are all but confirmed for a MWC unveiling, while the Desire 2 is popping up on our radar for the first time. We’ve also been told that LG’s Optimus 3D will be fully revealed next week in Barcelona, but the Star Tab? Now that’s a new one. Of course, it shouldn’t come as any surprise to see a swath of new names pop up just days before the year’s most gargantuan mobile show, but it definitely brings about a metric ton of questions. Is the Star Tab a phone? A slate? A unicorn-based gaming console? Will the Desire 2 simply be more desirable than the original, or will it utilize one of those new screen technologies HTC is feverishly working on? Hard to say from a simple list of names, but you can bet we’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for more as Mobile World Congress approaches.

Android Honeycomb features: smartphone apps will work on tablets without modification, built-in video chat
Written on February 6, 2011 at 4:00 pm, by John
At Google’s live Android event, Andy Rubin has just announced some exciting new features present in Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Most notably, all apps built for Android phones will work on Android tablets without being modified.
Details of other features:
- Multitasking is a primary feature, with easy access to all open- and recently open- apps from the home screen.
- Widgets can now be based on collections of data — so it’s like having apps in little windows, on your home screen. There are different kinds of widgets, too — stacks, grids, scrollers.
- Honeycomb also has a new notifications system, which pops up Growl-like toast windows in the bottom right corner. Notifications can contain a lot of data, including profile photos if a friend is IMing you — and they can be used for quick access to running apps, like media players.
- Hardware acceleration — by simply adding a single line of code, 2D hardware acceleration can be added to existing Android apps.
- Renderscript — Honeycomb has a new engine for powering 3D graphics, and looking at the demonstrations by War Drum Studios, it’s seriously slick.
- Built-in video chat — with a front-facing camera, Honeycomb supports video calls off the bat (using Google Talk).
There are pictures of the interface, video calling, Cee-Lo Green, 3D games — and more! — after the break.

Windows Phone 7 copy/paste update pushed to developers

We know that a Windows Phone 7 update is coming soon, and we know it’s going to fix some performance issues and bring copy/paste to the Microsoft mobile OS. We also know it’s going to plug the Chevron WP7 jailbreak hole. What we don’t know for sure is when it’s going to be released.
Still, now that the update is in the hands of select Windows Phone 7 developers there’s a good chance Microsoft will be pushing it to all users sometime in the very near future. For more information about the upcoming release, check out WP7 lead Brandon Watson’s interview on PPC Geeks.

AV-Test year-end report shows exponential growth of malware
Written on February 6, 2011 at 7:00 am, by John
Now, we don’t need fancy graphs to tell us that malware is all over the place — but it’s certainly eye-opening to see just how bad the problem has gotten. Unique samples gathered by AV-Test Labs this year nearly doubled in 2010 — to almost 20 million, up from 12 million in 2009. That’s no doubt due to the ever-morphing horde of rogue applications, which now include bogus system tune-up software in addition to the traditional fake antivirus programs we have come to despise.
Thankfully, security vendors have really stepped up their game in the last two years. Clearly they’re going to need to keep churning out smarter, more adaptive, and just plain better apps to keep users protected.
Those of you who want to read the full report can download the Excel sheet, courtesy Sunbelt Software.

Five privacy protection Firefox add-ons for Data Privacy Day
Written on February 6, 2011 at 2:00 am, by JohnHappy Data Privacy Day! While Lee already published one roundup showing a multitude of various tools, this post is all about Firefox!
If you’re reading Download Squad, you already know all of these classics. Kudos to you! Now go ahead and let your less computer-savvy coworkers or family members read this list, and make sure they install at least one of these if they use Firefox at all.
- HTTPS Everywhere is an add-on by the beardies over at the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation). It forces Firefox to communicate using HTTPS (secure HTTP) with a number of major websites, such as Google, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, PayPal and others.
- Ghostery focuses on those corporations and institutions bent on tracking your movements around the Web (or on their own websites). It detects when you’re being tracked by Google Analytics, Facebook and over 400 other ad networks, and provides an easy way to block those tracking mechanisms while leaving all other JavaScript functionality intact.
- Web of Trust provides a clear “traffic light” indication showing which sites you can trust with your credit card details, and which sites you should be leery of. The ratings are user-generated, and you don’t have to access the actual website in question to view them – they show up right on the search results page when you use Google, Yahoo!, Bing and even Wikipedia.
- NoScript is somewhat similar to Ghostery mentioned above, in that it also blocks JavaScript. But it’s a more extreme solution: Rather than just block trackers, it implements a “white list”, blocking all JavaScript except for scripts running on domains you trust. One of its many advantages is that it protects against cross-site scripting attacks.

4,000 Flickr photos deleted: A cautionary tale
Written on February 6, 2011 at 1:00 am, by JohnYahoo’s Flickr photo-sharing service is one of that company’s best offerings. It lets you easily post photos to the Web and share them with others. Flickr has a nice social aspect, letting you connect with other users whose images interest you.
If you’ve never tried Flickr, you should – there’s a free version to start, and the Pro account costs just $25 a year. But if you do, a word of caution: Make sure you’ve got your photos backed up somewhere else.
This is advice that Mirco Wilhelm, a photoblogger in Zurich, would surely share. In a monumental screw-up, a Flickr staffer accidentally deleted 4,000 of his images, accumulated over a 5-year period. Initially, Wilhelm was told there was no way to recover them.
From the New York Observer:
Mr. Wilhelm was shocked when he tried to log into his five-year old Flickr account and was prompted to create a username. Then he remembered a support ticket he had submitted to Flickr a few days before, complaining about another user who had posted photos Mr. Wilhelm suspected were stolen. Had Flickr received his support ticket and deleted the wrong account?
In fact, that’s exactly what happened, and the response from Flickr staff was discouraging and not nearly contrite enough.
After Mr. Wilhelm’s paid Flickr account was permanently deleted, with no recourse for retrieval, Flickr said:
Unfortunately, I have mixed up the accounts and accidentally deleted yours. I am terribly sorry for this grave error and hope that this mistake can be reconciled. Here is what I can do from here:
I can restore your account, although we will not be able to retrieve your photos. I know that there is a lot of history on your account-again, please accept my apology for my negligence. Once I restore your account, I will add four years of free Pro to make up for my error.
Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do.
Again, I am deeply sorry for this mistake.
Sorry though the employee may be, Wilhelm’s photos may be toast. Fortunately, he did have them stored elsewhere, and a Flickr spokesperson later told the Observer that the company was trying to restore them. Perhaps more worrisome is the fact that Flickr apparently doesn’t have a formal deleted-account process in place. From the spokesperson:
We are working on a process that would allow us to easily restore deleted accounts and we plan on rolling this functionality out soon.
You can read Wilhelm’s own account of the debacle at his Tumblr blog, but be aware the headline in his post contains language that may be considered offensive to some. There’s also a followup post.
As more and more of the data we create in this digital age moves into the cloud, it’s important to keep in mind just how ephemeral clouds can be. Flickr probably has all kinds of protection against hard drive crashes, software corruption and hardware downtime, but one bone-headed move by a human being, and it’s all for naught.
Make backups of your data in a form that you control, kids. And then, make backups of those backups. Don’t trust the cloud.

Open comments and a weather-permitting Geek Gathering [Updated]
Written on February 6, 2011 at 12:00 am, by John[Note: The Geek Gathering is being postponed due to weather. Details below. ?DS]
Did your employer decide to give you a weather-related day off? Not much to do, then, but hang out on TechBlog and frolic in the Friday open-comment thread.
Here’s what you’ll do to stay warm: Leave a comment about anything related to personal tech. I’ll approve it. Then, refresh your browser repeatedly to see what kind of reaction you’ve drawn from the crowd.
I mean, what else do you need to do today, eh?
Oh wait, there is tonight’s Geek Gathering . . . which will happen if driving conditions don’t make it unsafe.
And if the geeks do actually gather, it’ll be a special event. That’s because we’re trying out a new location for our first-Friday-of-the-month Technology Bytes meetup. We’ll be at Natachee’s Supper & Punch, at 3622 Main Street. This is a restaurant with a full bar, specializing in comfort food [PDF] . . . just what you’ll need on a frigid February night.
The Geek Gathering starts about 7:30 p.m., so bring your gear (yep, there’ll be Wi-Fi) and come on down to hand out with me, Jay Lee, Barrett Canon, Terry "phliKtid" Leifeste and Groovehouse. There’s also free parking in a lot off Berry Street, which is just north of Natachee’s.
Regarding the weather: Keep an eye on the TechBytes website. If we call it off, we’ll post notice there, and I’ll update this entry as well. Either way, use your best judgment about whether you should brave icy roads in your area to make the trip there or back.
Update: Given that a winter storm watch continues tonight, we’ve decided to postpone the Geek Gathering until next week, for safety’s sake. It will still be at Natachee’s, but on Friday, Feb. 11. Keep an eye on the TechBytes website for further details. See you then!

NetQin brings Mobile Anti-Virus to Android
Written on February 5, 2011 at 11:00 pm, by JohnNetQin, China’s market leader in mobile security, has brought their anti-virus application to Android. NetQin anti-virus offers real-time monitoring, instant scanning, contacts backup and restoration, and phone theft and loss protection. NetQin anti-virus uses what they call Cloud Scan:
"cloud and client twin-engine scanning, which is faster and more accurate at identifying and resolving threats from viruses and malicious programs. Key benefits include fast response to the latest security threats and comprehensive protection from Trojans, malware, and virus-infected plug-ins."
As new threats are found, the cloud scan engine is updated to deal with them. In real-world usage, the app seems to use little resources, and there is no noticeable slowdown with it running in the background.
Maybe you’ll never have need for an Android malware scanner, but threats do exists in the wild. It’s a by-product of being "open" to the installation of unapproved software. Applications like NetQin anti-virus fill that need, and it looks like this one will do very nicely. If you want to give it a try, it’s free in the Market, and is available in a version for Android 1.5 and Android 1.6, as well as a version for Android 2.x. The full press release is after the jump.

Saab chooses UQM motors for its 9-3 ePower EV, will be carving Alp twisties soon
Written on February 5, 2011 at 7:00 pm, by JohnSaab announced it was working on an all-electric version of its 9-3 wagon late last year, dubbing it the ePower. Now we’re learning what’s driving it. The vehicle will be powered by a 135kW UQM Technologies PowerPhase system, an equivalent of 181hp that will propel the car to 60 in 8.5 seconds — no Huayra but pretty peppy for an EV. Top speed is 93mph and the car’s range is expected to be 200km, or about 125miles. Interestingly Saab is eschewing more advanced water-cooled battery tech, like that found in the Volt or Model S, and going for an air-cooled design, despite even the classic 93 of the ’50s being water cooled. The company has indicated this will cut costs and promises the battery will still operate at full power even when temperatures drop below -22F. We’ll find out soon, as early cars are set to hit Swiss roads sometime in the coming months.

Nokia releases Symbian update for N8, C7 and C6-01, it’s not the one you’ve been waiting for
Written on February 5, 2011 at 1:20 pm, by JohnWhat we once knew as Symbian^3 was simplified into “just Symbian” a few months back, ostensibly to make updates faster and easier for Nokia to execute. Well, huzzah huzzah, here’s your first update. Version 1.1 of the new Symbian enhances communications by allowing you to accept meeting requests straight from an email and also integrating maps so that you may view the location as well. Besides that, N8 users get killer new features in Quick Office 6.4 like zooming in and out of Word documents along with three “high quality” games preloaded on new devices (which were already freely available in the Ovi Store). Excuse our overwhelming sense of disenfranchisement, but where the hell is our portrait QWERTY keyboard, split-screen text input, or those much-needed browser improvements? In the rubbish bin next to Symbian^4?

Vail is now Windows Home Server 2011, Drive Extender’s officially dead
Written on February 5, 2011 at 8:20 am, by JohnMicrosoft announced months ago that the artist formerly known as Vail — now officially known as Windows Home Server 2011 — was dropping Drive Extender functionality. Though we were given hope that the feature might be reinstated, the release candidate of WHS2011 went out to testers today… sans Drive Extender’s ‘drive pooling for dummies’ capability. In its place, Microsoft has included a Move Folder Wizard that alerts you when a new hard drive has been added (for those who were visited by the HDD fairy without their knowledge, no doubt) and walks you through formatting and partitioning your new drive. However, partition size is limited to 2TB for it to work with the server backup feature, so your massive collection of ripped Blu-rays will require a veritable alphabet of drive letters. Not all the news is bad though, as the dev team has enabled Shadow Copy in the OS to allow data time traveling in case you accidentally delete something. If that sounds good to you, hit the source link below and get your download on.

LauncherPro for Android hands-on: it works, but it won’t wow you
Written on January 29, 2011 at 11:20 am, by John
The most popular home screen and ‘app drawer’ replacement app for Android is LauncherPro — but I’m not sure why.
I mean, sure, it gives you a scrolling dock, and up to seven home screens — big whoop. Maybe I’m just a bit jaded. I have recently reviewed two very good home screen apps, after all. The truth is, though, except for a nifty scrolling, customizable dock, there’s simply no reason to use LauncherPro instead of ADW.Launcher — and Zeam, which is lighter-weight and easier to use, also has a very nice scrolling dock.
In fact, the only unique feature in LauncherPro costs $3, and you can’t even try it out before you buy.

Apple job posts point to built-in NFC capabilities for iPad / iPhone
Written on January 29, 2011 at 9:20 am, by JohnLadies and gentlemen of the, ahem, jury, we intend to show — through rumors and circumstantial evidence — that Apple might very well be building Nexus S-like NFC capabilities into next-generation iPhones and iPads. We present for your consideration exhibits A, B, and C: three Apple job posts, seeking two managers of global payment platforms and one test engineer for iPhone hardware. According to the original post, the right engineer possesses a background in both ICT (information and communication technology) and RFID (radio frequency identification), which forms the basis for NFC. Suspiciously, Apple removed the “ID” in “RFID” sometime in the past 24 hours. Still not convinced of Apple’s NFC involvement? Consider this: Apple’s manager of global payment platforms is tasked with contributing “to the analysis and development of new payment types and processes.” Okay, so there’s not a smoking gun in sight, but a little innocent conjecture never hurt anybody.

Sony Reader app for Android now available
Written on January 29, 2011 at 6:20 am, by John
Sony had promised an Android companion app for its eBook store in January 2011, and it’s delivered. You can now find Sony Reader in the Android Market, ready to pocket-size your digital tomes previously purchased from the Reader Store.
Like other eBook apps, Sony Reader allows you to adjust the font size and brightness, and supports bookmarking and highlighting. Tap the bottom of the reading window and a slider appears which you can move to skip ahead or back. You can also jump between bookmarks and highlighted passages, and Reader offers a decent built-in search function as well. As an added bonus for owners of a Sony Reader Daily Edition, you can keep your Android device and e-ink reading on the same page, as it were.

An iOS version is also in the works, though Sony’s mobile app page says only that it’s “coming soon.” Sony Reader for Android is a free download and is available now from the Android Market.

LauncherPro for Android updated, brings fancy home screen transitions (video)

The other thing this update ushers in is even smoother app drawer scrolling, which is also shown in the video (though it really is hard to say, objectively, whether it’s smoother than before!)

USC Smart Fences use spatio-temporal sensor patterns to create a DRADIS for airports
Written on January 29, 2011 at 12:20 am, by John How do you send an automated alert to a security guard whenever anyone tries to climb a fence, but ignore anyone simply leaning on said chain link? How can a sensor pick up the presence of a Jeep but ignore a steady flow of gigantic airliners? Damned if we know, we’re just bloggers, but a team at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering figured it out, creating what’s called the Smart Fence. It’s a series of sensors plus some associated circuitry that easily handle the situations described above and do so with amazing accuracy. How amazing? Here are the results of one test:
A perfect (100%) identification of unexpected intrusion events, and an average of less than two false positives per week and zero false negatives for recognition of human footsteps. In addition, no false positives or false negatives were reported by the installed fence sensors for a duration of 45 days of unattended operation, which included several days of seasonal storms.
Yeah, pretty good. The system is being developed for use around airports and military bases and is currently being funded largely by Navy grants. Now, if only they could create a system to prevent “laser events” and airport blizzards we might be able to travel safely again.

GNOME 3 website now live, tries a bit too hard to be cool, looks like Unity
Written on January 28, 2011 at 3:20 am, by JohnNew, clean-and-simple HTML5 websites are obviously in this week: GNOME, one of the most popular desktop environments for Linux, has just released a new website to celebrate the features of version 3, which will be released in April.
With phrases like “SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL” and “DISTRACTION-FREE COMPUTING” plastered all over the site it’s obvious that GNOME not only likes capital letters, but that it’s also trying to capitalize on the recent movement towards simpler, less-shiny interfaces. GNOME 3 now has a slogan, too — “made of easy” — which, to be honest, feels like it’s trying a bit too hard to be cool.
As to GNOME 3′s actual features, there’s built-in messaging (which presumably works with most IM protocols), and a new notifications system. The system settings panel has been overhauled, and the Windows key has been commandeered to provide quick access to your system: just hit the Windows key and start typing — like Windows 7 or Vista.
Before we finish, does anyone else think that GNOME 3 looks a lot like Canonical’s new Unity? There’s side-by-side images of them after the break. GNOME 3′s release coincides with Ubuntu 11.04, incidentally — but, just to reiterate, while Unity will be the default desktop environment in Ubuntu, users will be free to switch to either GNOME or Unity 2D.

O2 plans free and open WiFi network across the UK, Sky picks up The Cloud
Written on January 27, 2011 at 11:21 pm, by JohnOnly a handful of Muni-Fi projects ended in anything greater than eternal tears here in the States, but hopefully O2′s up for the challenge across the pond. The UK carrier just announced its intentions to “refine the WiFi landscape” in its home nation by launching O2 WiFi, with a raft of “premium hotspots” to be rolled out and managed by key venue owners. As of now, it’s hard to pinpoint who exactly will begin hosting O2′s routers, but the key part is this: they’ll be open for all customers to access for free, no matter which mobile or broadband provider they are with. Making no bones about who it’s coming after, the operator has affirmed its intentions to “at least double the number of premium hotspots currently offered by BT Openzone and The Cloud combined by 2013,” with the rollout to begin as early as today and continue for as long as it takes. ‘Course, doubling up The Cloud may take a little more work given that Sky just picked it up for an undisclosed sum, but hey, we’re sure every Briton in existence would just love to see these two duke it out for WiFi supremacy.

Hands-on: Gentle Alarm for Android is a beautiful way to wake up
Written on January 27, 2011 at 10:20 pm, by JohnWhen I listed Gentle Alarm as one of my top Android apps, I promised a more in-depth review — and here it is! Here are the key features of the app that’s been (successfully!) waking me up every morning for the past several weeks.
Profiles
One of the best concepts in Gentle Alarm is that not all alarms are exactly alike. The Profiles screen lets you set up individual alarm “types”. As you can see, each profile has its own complete set of options: You can select whether or not you’d like to have a pre-alarm (more on these later), the duration of the alarm, the initial and final volume, the alarm tone (or MP3 tune), and more.

Facebook temporarily removes developer access to your home address and mobile number
Written on January 27, 2011 at 6:20 pm, by John
Facebook, after a quiet announcement of the new home address and mobile phone access permissions, has made a quick about-turn. Citing some “useful feedback,” Facebook has decided to to make changes “to help ensure you only share this information when you intend to do so.”
The feature, which will be re-enabled in a few weeks, will allow Facebook app developers to request both your home address and mobile phone number. The changes being made will hopefully involve a bold, explicit warning in the Request for Permission boxes — the boxes that you click through to use a new app — but hopefully there are some better solutions on the table, too.
Ideally, Facebook would give us the option of securing your details permanently, from your Privacy Settings page. There should be a check box that simply says “never give my home address out” — but that might be a little too hopeful.

If you’ve been saying to yourself “I wish there was a way I could game, chew up my battery, and devour all the free space on my microSD card all at the same time!” your prayers have finally been answered!
Android 2.2 or better is required, as is Adobe Flash (obviously). Kongregate is a free download from the Android Market — hit the link below to install, or take the jump for the QR Code!

CorelDRAW video tutorial: Make a Polaroid-like image in five minutes
Written on January 27, 2011 at 4:20 pm, by JohnWhen most people hear the words “vector graphics”, the first thing that comes to mind is Adobe Illustrator. While Illustrator is a wonderful application, it’s certainly not the only game in town: I’ve been using CorelDRAW for several years now, and I just love it.
I’m not a graphics pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do need to turn out a few pretty pixels here and there for my day job. If you’re just thinking about getting into vector graphics, or if you’ve tried Illustrator and it proved too daunting, CorelDRAW might be just what you need.
Rather than just talk about CorelDRAW or write a tutorial, I figured it would be best to show it off in a short video. I took an image of my awesome cat, Ivan, and made it into a Polaroid-like snapshot. It took me less than five minutes, without any templates or saved settings. To see how I did it, hit Play after the fold.
By the way, this is the first of four CorelDRAW tutorials to be published in the next few weeks. If you’d like to see specific aspects of CorelDRAW in action, feel free to let me know in the comments!

Motorola Atrix 4G and Xoom tablet launching at the end of February, Droid Bionic and LTE Xoom in Q2
Written on January 27, 2011 at 3:20 pm, by JohnMotorola had one of the best CES showings of any company in recent memory, and now we’ve got some rough ship dates for all that new gear: CEO Sanjay Jha just announced on the company’s earnings call that the Atrix 4G for AT&T and 3G Xoom for Verizon will arrive at “the end of February,” while the LTE-enabled Droid Bionic and LTE Xoom will arrive at “the end of the second quarter” as previously promised. That sounds good to us — and with that earlier Best Buy leak suggesting the Xoom will hit on February 17, we’re hoping that Moto’s taking a long view of when the end of February actually begins. Even better, a late February Xoom release supports those rumors that Honeycomb will be generally released in March, which is when the real Android tablet invasion will begin. It’s all happening, folks.
Update: Oh boy. Jha followed up his Xoom comments in the Q&A portion by hinting that the Xoom might slip to March, but that he’s very confident they’ll make their timeline. Fingers crossed.

Dell to begin fixing busted M11x in March — or thereabouts

Dell Forum Liaison Chris Mixon posted that the company is working on getting a hinge replacement program going for the M11x laptop with “an ETA around March,” but cautions that start date is “dependent on a 3rd party vendor and other details so it is not concrete.” In other words, April or May might not be a bad month to keep in mind if you hate being disappointed, but know that the hinges will be repaired regardless of when your warranty expires. So, hopefully no fears for disappointment there.

HP / Palm’s 9.7-inch Topaz tablet to use 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8660, Adreno 220 GPU
Written on January 25, 2011 at 5:20 am, by JohnLooks like those whispers we heard about HP’s Topaz having a 1.2GHz Qualcomm CPU were true. The folks over at Pre Central just scored an internal document detailing presumed specifications of HP’s forthcoming 9.7-inch tablet, and it looks like the aforesaid CPU will be joined by an integrated Adreno 220 GPU, 512MB of DDR2 memory, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera and dual-band 802.11b/g/n WiFi. We’re told to expect an oleophobic Gorilla Glass screen with a standard XGA (1024 x 768) resolution, options for 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage, optional WWAN, an accelerometer, gyroscope, light sensor, microphone and a battery that’ll last for around eight hours in ideal circumstances. Naturally, webOS will be onboard, and we’re hearing that a WiFi-only model will indeed hit the market at some point. As for the connected versions? HSPA, LTE and CDMA variants are rumored, with the former two likely to be SIM-locked while all three carry A-GPS.
It should be noted that these documents were apparently fresh as of last fall, so everything is clearly subject to change. That said, we’re digging the reports that HP will be doing everything it can to fully support Flash on this here slate, and it may also consider a partnership with Blio for the digital bookworms in attendance. Naturally, cloud services is shaping up to be a huge deal, and it’ll definitely support inductive charging via the Touchstone v2. These docs also affirm what we’d heard about integrated Beats Audio technology and Tap to Share, with the second-gen Touchstone to also handle wireless picture sharing, cordless audio streaming and tether-free video beaming (just to name a few). Hit the source link the full skinny, and feel free to pressure HP to move February 9th a little closer to today.

Pomodroido is a beautiful Pomodoro timer for Android
Written on January 25, 2011 at 3:20 am, by JohnThe Pomodoro Technique is a simple way to stay focused while you work. In a nutshell, you choose a task, focus on doing only that for 25 minutes, and then take a 5-minute break. The interval during which you work is called a “pomodoro”, which means “tomato” in Italian. That’s because the guy who came up with the method used a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato. Oh, and every four pomodoros you take a longer break.
That’s the gist of the method, but of course, that’s a tad over-simplified. You can read all about it on the Pomodoro homepage, and there’s a free e-book, too. But even from my brief description, you can probably see a timer is an essential part of the system. And this is where Pomodroido comes in.
It’s a beautiful app (literally – it’s easy on the eyes), which simply counts down 25 minutes, and then gives you a five-minute break. The duration is configurable, so if you like longer breaks or longer “bursts” of work, you can set that easily.
It also tracks how many “pomodoros” you’ve successfully completed (a pomodoro is aborted if you’re distracted), and gives you awards for doing well. My personal favorite feature is that you can have it continuously emit a ticking sound while the timer is running, just like a kitchen timer would. That’s an essential part of the technique, and it really helps me stay focused (it’s difficult to forget the pomodoro is running – you can constantly hear it in the background).
The best part is that, because it’s on a mobile device, I can get up and walk away from my workstation during the breaks, and still know when to come back to continue working – so the breaks really do feel like breaks.
Speaking of breaks, you can find the QR code right after the break.

All we can speculate is that this Android phone is facing the same manufacturing issues as its WP7 cousin, but hopefully we’re wrong. Anyhow, what matters is that we’ve finally gotten our hands on a retail unit of the Snapdragon-packing Venue. So is it worth the wait for Androiders distanced from the Far East? And will this handset be the answer for our love-hate relationship with the Streak? Head on right past the break to find out.

LauncherPro for Android updated, brings fancy home screen transitions (video)
Written on January 24, 2011 at 11:20 pm, by JohnLauncherPro, the fan-favorite Android home screen replacement, has been updated! This is not the much-hyped complete rewrite of the codebase — that’s coming soon! — but it does bring one of the most-requested features: home screen transitions.
Rather than tell you all about them, we’ve made a video that shows off the four new Compiz-like transitions — it’s embedded after the break. Suffice it to say, they’re very, very sexy. And elastic-y. The other thing this update ushers in is even smoother app drawer scrolling, which is also shown in the video (though it really is hard to say, objectively, whether it’s smoother than before!)
You can download LauncherPro from AppBrain, or scan the QR code after the break.

Huawei Sues Motorola Over Patents Disclosed To Nokia Siemens-Acquired Wireless Network
Written on January 24, 2011 at 9:20 pm, by John
The drama continues between Chinese company Huawei Technologies and Motorola. The company has filed a lawsuit to prevent Motorola from giving Nokia Siemens (which acquired Motorola’s wireless network for $1.2 billion last year) Huawei’s IP information. Essentially, Huawei is saying that because Motorola and the company has a previous licensing relationship, Motorola’s wireless networking unit was provided with details on Huawei’s confidential intellectual property. Huawei says that since the Nokia acquisition, the company “has tried to ensure that Motorola does not transfer this confidential information to NSN”.

Call of Duty 4 hits Mac App Store at overpriced $50, a sign of things to come?
Written on January 24, 2011 at 8:20 pm, by John
And so the Apple-related price gouging hilarity begins: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, originally released in 2008, and available for $32 on Amazon, is now available from the Mac App Store for $50.
CoD4 is perhaps the first example of a ‘killer app’ for the Mac App Store, and exactly the injection of big-name awesomeness that it will need to attract other games publishers, and software giants like Adobe and Microsoft. CoD4 might be a little old, but given the awful Cold War-era graphics cards available in most Macs, it’s probably a good idea that Modern Warfare 2 wasn’t released first.
It should also be noted that this isn’t the first time that a digitally-distributed game is more expensive than a boxed version from Amazon. Steam is regularly more expensive than Amazon (though not usually by such a margin), and World of Warcraft bought directly from Blizzard as a digital download is more expensive than buying a box from Amazon, or your local games shop.
What remains to be seen, though, is whether software on the Mac App Store will be aggressively discounted like on Steam. The whole point of digital distribution is that you can sell something for almost-free, and still turn a profit. Let’s just hope that the Mac App Store doesn’t become another place for Apple to gouge its users for more money — digital downloads are convenient, but they really should be cheaper than their real world counterparts.
